Gutzeit arsenic analyser, limit test 2421A BP 2012 WHO 2.2.5 2.4.2 Arsenic
The HLL apparatus for limit testing for arsenic using the Gutzeit method, item number 2421A, is a glass apparatus designed for visual inspection to determine whether the arsenic content of a sample exceeds the limit value specified in the applicable test specification. The apparatus is manufactured by Landgraf Laborsysteme HLL GmbH and is intended for use in pharmaceutical and chemical-analytical laboratories.
During the test, arsine is generated from the prepared sample. The gas is passed through the gas delivery tube and the section filled with lead(II) acetate. It then reacts with mercury(II) bromide paper. The resulting colour change is compared with a reference prepared at the same time.
The Gutzeit apparatus has two flat-ground glass surfaces. The reagent paper is placed between the flat-ground surfaces. A metal clip holds the two glass components securely together during the test.
Reference to literature and procedure: The method is based on the classic Gutzeit apparatus for limit testing for arsenic, described in the British Pharmacopoeia 2012, Appendix VII, ‘Limit Test for Arsenic’. The principle of the method, using lead(II) acetate and mercury(II) bromide paper, is also described in the WHO International Pharmacopoeia, General Method 2.2.5 ‘Limit test for arsenic’.
